How We Have Helped!

1. Help requested: A young man emailed us from New York and asked if we could check on his mom who was 79 and living alone in Tampa. HAFTB's response: We sent one of our volunteers to visit the mom. It turns out that she needed medical attention for her eyes, but had not seen a doctor about it. HAFTB helped her schedule an appointment and made sure that someone was there to get her to the appointment. 2. Help requested: A young child had been sent to a hospital in Tampa for major surgery. The parents could not come, but a family member contacted HAFTB and asked that we please keep an eye on the child. HAFTB's response: We made sure that the child received regular visits from one of our volunteers, who spoke Creole and French, since the child did not speak English. We translated for them and the individual who accompanied them to the hospital. We brought them Haitian food as often as possible and when the doctors allowed it. We surrounded them regularly with Haitian love and affection. 3. Help requested: A woman who has a very sick sibling in Haiti wanted to go home to visit them. However, she herself was not well enough to make the trip all the way to Orlando to get her visa. HAFTB's response: We are currently advocating for her with the Orlando Haitian consulate, so that they allow a member of HAFTB to represent her so she does not need to make the trip herself. 4. Help requested: We got a call from a woman who just moved to Tampa. Due to unavoidable circumstances, her husband had to leave before emptying the 20 foot moving truck that had all their property. Since the truck had to be returned the next day, she went into a panic and called HAFTB for help. HAFTB's response: Several of the board members immediately started calling around for volunteers to help her unload. Within 2 hours, three volunteers showed up at her house, and within the next 2 hours the truck had been completely unloaded. She did tip them generously because she was so grateful, but those HAFTB volunteers had showed up just to help
